Malcolm John HAINES was born on the 5th of February 1918 at ADELAIDE, to Mrs G R UMA of TERKA (near WILMINGTON). He was born in Adelaide after being brought up at TERKA by the time of his enlistment his home town was Whyalla (Formerly Hummock's Hill) in South Australia

Malcolm had served as a trooper in the 9th / 23rd Light Horse militia, until he enlisted into the AIF on 21 February 1942, at Wayville, SA

He was allocated Service Number SX17553

Malcolm married Ida Blanche HAINES on 12/6/1942.

In May 1945 Helen Elizabeth HAINES was born at the Childrens Hospital in North Adelaide, Malcolm and Ida were overjoyed. Helen was a little sister to Terry and Janet HAINES.

He served in the Army Trade Depot, the Motor Vehicle Training Centre, with the South Australia Lines of Communication Provost Company and the 5th Australian Reinforcement Depot. He then served in New Guinea until February 1946 with the 6th Australian Div Reception Camp, the 6th Australian Div Provost Company, the 1st Australian Div Provost Company, the 30th Australian Infantry Battalion, the 4th Australian Infantry Battalion and finally the 2/1st Australian Field Regiment.

On 14 Feb 1946 Malcolm discharged Australian Military Forces as a Corporal.

He received The Pacific Star medal, Defence Medal, The War Medal and the Active Service Medal for his service.

On leaving the Army Malcolm, like a lot of returned servicemen joined the SA Police Force. After 6-months training under the Returned Soldiers' Rehabilitation Scheme he was attached to the Foot Branch doing beat duty and relieving at suburban stations.

Sadly on April 23 1947, Helen Elizabeth HAINES died after a long illness at Children's Hospital, North Adelaide.  Helen  was the dearly beloved daughter of Malcolm and Ida Haines who were living at 114 Port road, Hindmarsh. She was aged 1 year and 11 months and on the 24th of April she was buried at the Dudley Park Cemetery.

Malcolm later transferred to the Mounted branch and he was appointed to Gawler in August. 1949.

In 1951 Mounted Senior Constable Haines, who was living at May Street, Evanston left the Police Force to take up employment with the E. & W.S  Department.

At that time he reported that he intended to continue residing in the Gawler area.

Malcolms mother Gwendoline Ruth UMA was living at Magill when she died on the 30th March 1974.  Malcolm and Ida had been close to Gwen especially in her final years.

Ida Blanche HAINES (Nee VIRGO) died on the 9th November 1975.  At her request she was buried on the 18th of November finally reunited for ever with Helen at the Dudley Park Cemetery.

Malcolm died on 19 November 1995, aged 77 years and was interred at his request with his mother Gwendoline at the  Centennial Park Cemetery “Peace Court” area.
