104 years ago today, on the 15th February 1917, Private Allan Henry Avard, 35th Battalion (Reg No-1891), crane worker (hooker on at Cranes, Bullock Island, N.S.W.), from Thornton, New South Wales, died from pleurisy, age-24.

Born at Thornton, New South Wales 1892 to William Henry (died 1916) and Henrietta Spencer (died 1935 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article136840639) Avard of High Street, East Maitland, New South Wales and 6 Morpeth Street, East Maitland, N.S.W., Allan enlisted January 1916 at Broadmeadow, N.S.W. It was reported that Allan was living with sister at Carrington, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 9.2.1917 (pleurisy), Allan is resting at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Plot III Row A Grave 47.

Mr Avard’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates, Newcastle Central Methodist Mission Roll of Honour, Newcastle Methodist Church Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 2nd January 1916, 7 names originally inscribed, 44 names now inscribed), Woodberry-Tarro Public School Roll of Honour, Miller's Forest G.U.O.O.F.
