Eric was the fifth of nine children of Donald Archibald McKinnon (born 1881 in Clare, South Australia) and Ada Florence Shore (born 1882 in Stockport, South Australia). Donald and Ada married in 1903 at Broken Hill - an outback mining town in NSW near the South Australian border. They lived in Broken Hill, where Donald worked as an Engine Driver, and regularly returned to South Australia - which is where their children enlisted in WWII.
A Dairy Hand in Broken Hill, Eric enlisted in the Army in December 1941 and was a Private (Service No:SX15762) attached to 18 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in April 1944. Sister Lorraine Jean (RAAF, Service No:96837) and brothers Colin Malcolm (Sapper, Service No:SX8919) and Laurance (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:141808) also served in WWII, as did Brothers-in-Law Richard Thomas Toohey (Private, Service No:SX14441) and George Brian McLachlan (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:121747).
Eric returned to Broken Hill following the War and was a Dairy Hand in 1953 when he married Muriel Joan Moore (born 1927 at Stansbury in South Australia). Eric and Muriel settled in Broken Hill where Eric worked as a Labourer until his Death in 1978. Muriel died in 2007.
