Leigh Stuart Wallman was born in Adelaide, on 23rd January 1918. He was the son of Mr and Mrs LH Wallman, of Balham Street, Kingswood, SA and was educated at St Peter’s College Adelaide. He studied medicine at the University of Adelaide where he graduated MB BS in 1940. He married Bernice Cavell Eden, daughter of Mr and Mrs James Eden of Sheoak Log, at the Pirie Street Methodist Church, on 18th November 1940. His best man was Dr Arthur Smith and his sister Miss Glen Wallman attended the bride. Her brother, Pilot Officer John Jerram Eden, RAAF, was killed serving with the RAF, in Burma on 14th March 1942.
Wallman joined the AAMC, and was called up for full-time duty at the rank of captain. Initially posted to 6 Cav FdAmb, with the CMF, he joined the 2/AIF on 31st December 1941. He was initially posted to 2/8th FdAmb from 31st December 1941, but does not appear to have been with this unit in the Middle East, He had several postings within Australia including 121 AGH, 109 AGH and 22 Australian AA Bty during 1942. He served in the Solomon Islands (Bougainville), with 15th FdAmb and 17th FdAmb from 27th February 1945 to 30th October 1945 when he emplaned from Bougainville to Cairns. He was given refresher training at the RAH, ACH and QVMH at the end of his service. His appointment was terminated on 8th November 1945.
Wallman moved to Sydney after the war and chose a career in dermatology. He passed the DPH Sydney, in 1947, and DDM, Sydney in 1959. He took a position as the assistant chief medical officer, with the Coal Board, NSW, from 1948 to 1951. Wallman and his wife divorced during 1960, and he then took up a position as a consultant dermatologist at the Toowoomba General Hospital, Queensland, from 1963 to 1976. Wallman remarried to Doreen Ann, and they lived in Tourist Road, Toowoomba, QLD. He continued to live and practise in Toowoomba for the rest of his life.
