Holstein was a No.1 Lewis Gunner and took his gun forward time after time at critical moments bringing heavy fire to bear on various points of resistance. This fire had excellent results and he finally pushed forward with his Officer to the outpost line and continually engaged enemy guns which were holding up the advance. The tripod was shot away from his gun and he was also wounded in the hand, but nevertheless he carried on and refused relief until nightfall. He set a high example of judgement, determination and initiative.
