Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Herbert was an old boy of the Ballarat orphanage, born in 1891. His mother had died in 1894.
Herbert White and his brothers George and William were residents at the Ballarat Orphanage from 1893 to 1906.
Herbert White was a gardener when he enlisted for service during World War One in Melbourne in July 1915. He was reported missing in action on 5 August 1916, and was confirmed killed in action at Pozieres on that date about 4 months later. His remains were never found. His medals and possessions were sent to his aunt, a Mrs. W.H. Davey of Geelong Victoria. It seems she may have looked after Herbert White and his brother George White after they left the orphanage.
His brother William White, died of measles in 1898 at the orphanage and his other brother 4315 Pte. George Phillip White, 1st Field Ambulance AIF, died of wounds in England on 10 August 1916. (Five days after Herbert went missing).
A tree was planted for Herbert James White in the Ballarat Orphanage's Arthur Kenny Avenue of Honour.
