Elder of two brothers (George and Leonard) who served in WWII, Private George Edward Sparks (Service Nos:S34315/SX14307) enlisted in the ACMF on 14 March 1941, and transferred to the AIF on 2 September 1941. Trooper Sparks - graded Cook - served with 2/9 Armoured Regiment, and was Discharged on 2 January 1946.

George was born in Edwardstown, South Australia in 1914, second of six children of George Frederick Sparks (b1886 in London, England) and Dorothy Maud Neale (b1889 in Hackney, London, England). George Snr worked as a Paper Boy and then Wood Machinist in London, where he and Dorothy married 1910, immigrating that year to Melbourne on board the Salamis. George Snr and Dorothy settled in Adelaide, and in 1915 George Snr enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:1814). Following his Discharge from the Army in 1919, George Snr and Dorothy settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and George Snr worked as a Wood Machinist.

George worked as a Clerk for the SA Brewery, and in 1941 enlisted in the Army and married Verna Marjorie Werrey (b1915 in Melbourne, Victoria). Following his Discharge from the Army, George and Verna settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and George was a Clerk. Verna died in 1976 and George died in 1984.
