He was a son of Eliza Holley, of Palmwoods, Queensland, and the late Frederick Holley. Born at Huntspill, Somerset, England.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 1 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 8 June 1916.

Admitted to 4th Australian Field Ambulance, 13 October 1916 (tonsillitis); rejoined Bn, 24 October 1916.

Reported missing, 12 October 1917.

Court of Enquiry, Crepy, 2 November 1917, concluded: 'Killed in action, 12 October 1917'.

[There is an error in the AIF report in that he was actually killed on 1th April 1917, so the references to October that year cannot be correct]

Regimental number incorrectly entered on Embarkation Roll as 3326.

Two brothers are known to have served with Australian forces-Private Clifford Holley -Service Number 538 - 31st Battalion was killed in action, 20 July 1916 in France, and Private Henry James Holley -Service Number 537, also of the 31st Battalion, survived the war and returned to Australia 9 February 1919.
