DUNSTONE John Leonard MB BS FRACGP
1916 – 1995
John Leonard Dunstone was born on the 8th January 1916, in Adelaide. He was the son of Leonard John Dunstone and Stella Marion, nee Salter. His father was a medical practitioner who served in the Royal Australian Navy, during WW1. Dunstone like his father was educated at Prince Alfred College and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating MB BS in 1939.
Dunstone enlisted, in the Army, on 6th November 1940 and in the 2/AIF on 31st July 1941 and did not have previous military service. He named his wife Mary as his next of kin and they were living in Cambridge Terrace, Brighton, SA, at the time. He was posted to the 2/8th FdAmb, at the rank of captain. While posted to 2/8th FdAmb he had several short detachments to 3rd Trg Bn, Loveday Camp and ACH Wayville until October 1941. He left for the Middle East from 2 MD, on 2nd November 1941, and was allotted to 1 Aust Corps, as an RMO, where he served until 24th March 1942. He was posted to 2/1 AGH on 25th September 1942 and had several short detachments until he embarked from Townsville for PNG on 12th July 1943. He arrived in Port Moresby on 14th July 1943 and was posted to 101 Aust Lt FdAmb. Followed by appointment as MO to 6th FdAmb. He returned to Australia in March 1944 and was briefly detached to 128 AGH. He returned to Port Moresby and 6th FdAmb in August 1944, when he was then sent to New Britain, in November 1944. He contracted troubling skin conditions and was evacuated, with dermatitis, back to SA for duties in a cooler climate, in January 1945. He served in 105 AMH until his discharge on 21st April 1945.
Dunstone took up a general practice after the war. He was living at Gawler Terrace, Walkerville, SA, in 1980. He was a member of the AMA and Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. John Leonard Dunstone died in 1995.
