Leslie was the eldest son of James and Dorothy, and the second of their six children. His father enlisted in both WWI and WWII, and both his younger brothers served in WWII.
His youngest brother, Ronald, was killed in action in 1944 aged 18. He was killed during an air attack in the Philippines on board HMAS Australia. See https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/92807993.
