REID Arthur Douglas MB BS

1901-1983

Arthur Douglas Reid was born in Melbourne, Victoria, on 6th August 1901. He was the son of Frederick William Reid and Violet, nee Richter. The family moved to Kingswood, SA. He was educated at St Peter’s College, Adelaide and the University of Adelaide where he graduated MB BS in 1924. He became engaged to Janet Mary McGilp on 30th September 1924, and they married on 3rd February 1926 in Hawthorn, SA. She was the youngest daughter of Neil McGilp and Florence Arabella, nee Tapley, of Unley Park, SA. They were to have a daughter and two sons.

Reid joined the AAMC at the rank of captain, on 17th July 1941, and posted to 9 AGH. At the time he was living at Mount Lofty and he named his wife as his next of kin. Reid embarked, on 3rd September 1941, from Sydney, for the Middle East, on the GG, and disembarked in Derna on 23rd September 1941. He was detached to the Services Trg Regt, later 1 Depot Bn and 9th AGH in January 1942. He remained with 9th AGH until he left the Middle East, on the Yarmula, on 13th February 1942, arriving back in 4MD, Adelaide, on 9th April 1942. After some leave in Adelaide he embarked from Melbourne, on 14th August 1942, on the Manunda for PNG. Reid arrived in Port Moresby, PNG, on 23rd August 1942, where he was attached to 3 FdAmb. He developed paresis of his right leg and was evacuated to Brisbane on the 2/1 Hospital Ship, and then evacuated 105 AMH, in Adelaide, on 15th November 1942. Reid was medically reclassified because of ‘foot drop’ and a fracture above his left elbow, and taken on strength of 105 AMH in March 1943. He continued to suffer with several illnesses during 1944, but undertook a short-term locum tenens for Dr Max Reid at Mt Lofty in October 1944. He remained at 105 AMH until discharge, and transferred to the role of Officers on 4th January 1946.

Reid returned to his general practice at Mount Lofty and at the Stirling, Hospital, SA where he was the medical officer of health. Arthur Douglas Reid died on 11th August 1983, and is buried at Stirling Cemetery, Aldgate, SA. He was survived by his wife, daughter Pamela, and son Robert.  His son John predeceased him in 1967. His wife, Janet died a year later, in 1984.
