Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Corporal Edward Albert Kempster (Service No:SX13464) enlisted in the AIF on 28 June 1941 as a Private attached to 3 Training Battalion. Private Kempster served with 2/27th Infantry Battalion (the second of the largely South Australian Battalions in WWII - SA History Hub) in the Middle East (18 September 1941 - 25 March 1942: operations in Lebanon and the coastal plains); in New Guinea (7 August 1942 - 11 January 1943 and 6 August 1943 - 23 February 1944 - Port Moresby, Mission Ridge on the Kokoda Trail, Jaware and Goa, Ramu Valley and Finisterre Ranges); and in Borneo (2 June 1945 - 6 March 1946 - Balikapan and Celebes). Corporal Kempster was attached to 2/27th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 22 March 1946.

Edward was born in Adelaide, South Australia in 1921, eldest of two children of Ernest (Ernie) Albert Kempster (b1893 in Lincolnsfield, South Australia) and his first wife Lavinia Jane Pearce (b1902 in Perth, WA). Ernie was a Butcher when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915 (Driver; Service No:22202), and he and Lavinia married in 1920 in Adelaide. Following Lavinia's death in 1926, Ernie (a Widower with two small children) remarried, and settled in Adelaide where he raised his family and worked as a Tramways Motorman.

Edward was a Grocer's Assistant in Adelaide when he enlisted in the Army in 1941. Following his Discharge, he returned to Adelaide where, in 1952 he married May Niven (nee Anderson; b1920 at Streaky Bay, South Australia). May died in 1993 and Edward in 2001.
