Son of Mrs. J.C. HERDE of 23 Salter Street, Kensington, SA.  Educated at Chilpieddie, Richard played cricket and football for Minnipa District Clubs.  In civilian life he worked on a farm conducted by his father for several years, and from there enlisted in June 1941.  He fought through the desert campaing and then on to Palestine.

Married Mavis Alice TOOGOOD of 20 Princess Street, Adelaide 15 March 1944.
