Son of Mr and Mrs Alvine PENGILLY of Germein Raod, Solomontown, SA. Alfred was married and residing at 9 Second Street, Port Pirie, SA. He was educated at Solomontown Public and High Schools and was fond of cricket. In civilian life he was employed by the B.H.P. at Whyalla. He enlisted in May 1941 and saw service in Palestine and Syria.
