WWI New Zealand Merchant Marine

There were various incidents that occurred while he was overseas in England and South Africa during the WW1 years. He never elaborated on his war service but we understand he joined the Merchant Navy at a young age. He did mention a story that when he was in South Africa: as a sailor; he went to the dentist to have a bad tooth pulled out. The dentist ended up dragging him around the room in the chair trying to remove it as it was reluctant to come out.
