Albert was one of four sons of Enoch and Margaret Marshall of Ulverstone, Tasmania, who enlisted and served overseas during WW1.
Two of the sons lost their lives, the oldest, 26/592 Sergeant Abraham Alexander Marshall 4th Battalion 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade, died of wounds in France on 14 July 1916, age 36, and 1the youngest, 452 Private Sydney Alexander Gordon Marshall 40th Battalion AIF, was killed in action in Belgium 13 October 1917 at only 19 years of age.
Another brother, 3171 Corporal Thomas Arnold Marshall 21st Battalion AIF, was three times wounded and returned to Australia in 1919.
Albert Morris Marshall fought at the Anzac landing and at Quinn’s Post at Gallipoli until he was shot in the hand and thigh on 7 August 1915. He was evacuated to Egypt. He rejoined the 15th Battalion during October 1915.
He was promoted Corporal during March 1916 and then to Second Lieutenant at Pozieres on 25 July 1916, at just 20 years of age.
He was reported missing in action at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917, later confirmed as a prisoner of war in Germany. He was promoted to Lieutenant in captivity on 19 June 1917 and was repatriated to England on 14 December 1918.
He was returned to Australia in early 1919 and promoted to Captain on 1 April 1919.
