Son of Mrs Christina Pauline and the late Mr Andrew George WALLACE of 163 Glen Osmond Road, Frewville, SA. Educated at Yaninee, Eyre Peninsula, he played football and cricket and in civilian life was a farmer. He joined the AMF in April 1939 and was sent to Woodside as a transport driver and then as a switchboard operator at Keswick. He enlisted in the AIF in March 1941, trained at Bongilla and left for Victoria with the R.A. Engineers in October 1941. Bettie was one of the few South Australians to be sent away as a fitter with the Commandos. Quiet and well liked, he was a good shot and mechanically minded.
