Walter Alfred Russell was born on 17th April 1909, at Wallaroo Mines, SA.  He was the son of Dr Walter Henry Russell and Stella May Hickson, nee Skinner.  He was educated at St Peter’s College and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating in 1935. He married Cora Mabel Groves-Jones, in 1936.  She was born in Kent, England, and was the daughter of Henry George Grove-Jones and Ethel, nee Bigg. Russell enlisted in January 1940 and previously served as a captain, in the CMF. He was promoted temporary major while serving, as an RMO, with the L of C area in SA, but returned to the rank of captain on transfer to the 2/AIF. Russell was posted to Alice Springs, on 12th September 1940, and returned to Adelaide in early 1941, while awaiting his appointment to 2/AIF. He then served as RMO to 9 Armoured Regiment, and during this time attended courses at the Northern Territory Force School and the LHQ Tactical School.
