Born Roger Arnold Kempster in Kadina, South Australia in 1916, Thomas was the seventh of eight children of John (Jack) Alexander Kempster (b1872 at Magpie Creek, Clare, South Australia) and Ellen Weldon (b1877 at Keilli, Port Pirie, South Australia). Jack (a Labourer) and Ellen married in 1905 in Kadina - and lived there and in Bute, Wokurna, Wallaroo Mines, Brenda Creek via Morgan and in Mitcham, where Jack worked as a farm Hand, Woodcutter and Labourer.
Thomas (and his sister Ina) had some encounters with the Police, and served time at Edwardstown Industrial School (where he worked as a Labourer) and used the name Thomas. He worked as a Stockman at Palpararra via Windorah in QLD and at Maree in SA before enlisting in the Army. Following his Discharge, Thomas worked as a Stockman in QLD, at Bunumbert Station via Hay in NSW, and in the Alice Springs region in the NT. Thomas died in 1967.
