WILSON Robert Kevin MB BS

1913 – 1982

Robert Kevin Wilson was born in Prospect, SA, on 27th October 1913. His parents were Robert John Wilson and Grace Maude, nee Craven. He was educated at St Peter’s College and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating in 1937. Wilson married Joan Mary Daw at St Peter’s College Chapel, on 1st July 1939. She was the elder daughter of Mr and Mrs SC Daw of Lucindale, SA.

Wilson enlisted in the Army, at the rank of captain, on 1st January 1941, and named his wife, Joan as his next of kin. He was immediately called up and posted to 4 AGH in 4MD.  He left for Melbourne in February 1941, to embark for the Middle East arriving in Palestine on 23rd March 1941. He was initially attached to the AAMC Trg Wing as an RMO, and then appointed to 2 AGH in July 1941. He had an admission to 2 AGH for cellulitis on his back during August 1941. He briefly served with 2/8th FdAmb, until he was allocated for duty as a MO with 2/2nd FdAmb on 17th November 1941. Wilson left the Middle East in March 1942 and arrived in Columbo, Ceylon, on 21st April 1942. He had a series of admissions to hospital for infections and returned to Australia in May 1942, where he was allocated to 105 AMH. While still in SA, he was posted to 16th FdAmb and completed a chemical warfare course. He remained in SA during 1944, serving mainly with 105 AMH and several short-term postings within the state. Wilson left Brisbane for Bougainville on 6th December 1944, and was posted to 19th FdAmb. He was promoted to major on 23rd April 1945, but continued to be troubled with eczema and infections of his skin and had several more admissions to hospital. He returned to Australia on 27th July 1945 for treatment and by August was admitted to 105 AMH then Kapara convalescent home. He remained in SA and was discharged from duty on 29th November 1945.

It is assumed that Wilson had a medical practice in the Riverland of SA, after the war. He is recorded as having been the medical officer at the Renmark District Hospital, and on the local board of health in Renmark. He was also a member of the Irrigation Trust of the Paringa District Council. There is little further information on his post war career.  Robert Kevin Wilson died on 30th November 1982, when he was living in Tusmore Avenue, Tusmore, a suburb of Adelaide. His wife, Joan survived him.
