Horace Verdun George was born on 25 February 1917 in the small country town of Orroroo, South Australia. He was educated at Yongola and Mannanarie schools. After school he worked as a farm labourer. He was raised in the Methodist faith. By the time the world fell into war, Horace was 23 years old. 

On 29 January 1941, he travelled to Wayville, South Australia, and enlisted in the Australian Army. He was allotted to the 6 Division Cavalry Regiment and trained in South Australia. In February 1941 was moved to NSW to continue training. In May he had a short hospital stay for an unknown illness.

He served in the Middle East from 25 July 1941 and was detached for special duty in December that year. He rejoined his unit in March 1942 in Dimra and was then transferred to the 9 Australian Divsion Cavalry Regimant in May 1942. He served in the Middle East until January 1943.

After his returnf to Australia he took some leave and then was transferred to the No 1 Australian Parashute Training Battalion in June 1943 and qualifed as a parachutist. He was appointed Special Group III Parachute packer in September 1943. In November 1944 he was transferred back to South Australia and soon after was admitted to hospital with fractured ribs after and accident

On 24 October 1944, Horace married Valda Adell George.

Finally, on 16 January 1945, Horace was discharged from the army. At some stage after the war he moved permanently to NSW and in 1964 was living at Crows Nest according to a Stat Dec in his service record.
