Eldest of four brothers (Richard, Lenard, Ronald and Albert) who served in WWII, Private Richard Stanley Bayly (Service No:SX10421) enlisted in the AIF on 30 November 1940 and was trade tested as Welder, appointed Driver. Private Bayly was attached to 8th Division Sub Park on 23 October 1941 when he embarked from Sydney for Singapore on board HMAT Zealandia. Reported Missing in Singapore on 9 April 1942, Private Bayly was confirmed as a PoW held by the Japanese on 21 October 1943. Recovered from the Japanese at Changi on 2 September 1945, Private Bayly embarked on 13 September 1945 from Singapore for Labuan on board HS Manunda, and emplaned from Labuan for Cairns en route for Sydney. Private Bayly was attached to 8th Division Ammunition Sub Park at Discharge on 31 January 1946.
The eldest of four children (sons), Richard was born in Bowmans, South Australia in 1912 to William Robert Bayly (b1887 in Yelta, South Australia) and Myrtle Edith Briggs (b1882 in Inkerman, South Australia). William worked as a Teacher in Adelaide, and he and Myrtle married in Prospect in 1910, and lived in Bowmans and Nailsworth before moving to Broken Hill in 1914. In 1918 William and Myrtle were living in Broken Hill, where William was a Contractor and Salvage Salesmn (Wiehart & Bayly), returning to South Australia where they settled at Two Wells - William worked as a Teacher, Contractor and Mason.
Richard was working as a Cook in Adelaide when he enlisted in the Army in 1940. In 1947 in Adelaide he married Irene Frisby (b1914 in Gawler, South Australia). Richard was in Greenacres, Adelaide in the early 1950s when he and Irene separated - Richard moved to New Zealend where he died in 1965. Irene died in Adelaide in 2016.
