Born in Bordertown SA on 04 December 1916 Alan Roy Henstridge was raised in Hilton, a suburb of Adelaide.

Alan enlisted in 1940 and was soon heading by ship to the Middle East. After time in the Deserts of the Middle East, he returned to Australia and shortly afterwards found himself in the Jungles of Papua New Guinea.

Alan was engeged to future wife Joyce, prior to embarkation. During his time overseas Joyce took up work in the munitions factories firstly at Finsbury and then Edinburgh. Joyce recalls her times at the munitions factories as exciting and sometimes dangerous. 

On his return and discharge they were married at Pirie ST Methodist Church in Adlaide on26 June 1945. They initially purchased a block of land under the War Service Scheme (WSHS) in the suburb of Richmond. Alan decided that he didn't want to live under the flight path of Adelaide Airport sold the block and purchased another in Warwick Street Largs North and built their family home. Joyce lived their until 1922. They had two children, Alan Anthony and a Leonie Joyce.

After the War lan commence work at the Adelaide-Brighton Cemewnt Works and worked there until he retired. Joyce recalled a serious accident during his time at the Cement works and broke every bone in his leg, but he recovered without much complaint and went back to work.
