Son of Owen Roy MOBBS of 4 Harris Street, Norwood.  Educated at Thebarton Public and Thebarton High Schools he played cricket and was a keen swimmer.  Clifford was a member of the Militia for two years (Norwood Section) and joined the AIF in August 1940.  In civilian life he worked for several years in Harrington's Grocery Stores in Norwood.  Training at Woodside, he left Australia for the Middle East in October 1940 and fought in Egypt and through the Syrian campaign, returning to Australia in March 1942.
