Son of Mr. and Mrs. S.B. Edwards of Blackwood, SA. Educated at the Hutchins School, Hobart, Neutral Bay Boys's High School NSW and later at King's College Adelaide where in 1936 he won 1st prize in the highest division in the Australian Museum Essay Competitiion and the President's Gold Medal for est essay. He was a good all round athlete and plaed Rugby Football in NSW where he secured his 'Blue' and in South Australia with East Torrens. From an early age he has been keenly interested in anthopology and the welfare of aboriginies, being honary secretary of the Aborigines' Protection Leage of S.A. In 1939 he was a member of the Dr. Duguid's Expedition which investigated conditions in the Musgrave and Petermann Ranges, Lasseter's country. In 1938 he joined the Volunteer Milita attaining the rank of Sergeant and in July 1940 enlisted as a Corporal with the AIF. He took part in campaigns in the Western Desert and Syria.
