Prior to the war Lloyd was engaged in the retail business in various Murray River Towns.  He joined the State Branch in 1942, after the war he transferred to Waikerie and Morgan-Cadell then Brighton. At the State branch he was employed as Records Officer and Appeals Organiser.  He discribes him self as "something of a gardening fiend".
