Michael John Toogood was born on December 4, 1909, in Adelaide, South Australia. He joined the Australian Military Forces on July 11, 1940, and was initally assigned to the 1st Depot Battalion as a Private, with service number SX8541. His wife Mavis Lilian was listed as his next of kin. Prior to the war he worked as a driver.

He served in the Middle East serving with the 2nd/43rd Infantry Battalion from 2nd February 1941 until 5th Nopvember 1941 when he was returned to Australia medically unfit. He was hospitalised at Wayville with Vascular disease of the heart. He was officially discharged February 13, 1942. 

At the age of fifty-seven, he passed away on November 23, 1967. He is buried next to his wife Mavis in the Eyre South section of West Terrace Cemetery.
