John Lindsay Cameron
Lake Terrace Cemetery-In memory of John L Cameron, killed at El Alamein, 22 July 1942, aged 34 years. SX 7306 Lieutenant 2/43 Battalion.
John Lindsay Cameron was born at Mount Gambier on 21 December 1907, the second son of Malcolm Duncan Cameron and Martha Telfer. He spent his early years at Glencoe where he attended primary school. He enjoyed football and cricket and was known as Jock.
As a young man he was employed with the E, S & A Bank and spent four years at the Tanunda branch. In 1934 he was transferred to Victor Harbour. He later returned to Mount Gambier as relieving manager of the South-East.
In June 1940, during World War 2, he enlisted for active service and he left Australia in December.
In 1941 he took part in the siege of Tobruk which lasted 241 days. These Australian soldiers were described by the Germans as rats living in tunnels and would later become known as the Rats of Tobruk. Around 3,000 of these men were killed or injured during the siege.
He rose to the rank of Lieutenant, and after some time spent in Syria, he was sent to Egypt. It was here during the first battle of El Alamein that Jock was killed.
He is buried in the El Alamein War Cemetery in Egypt.
