Son of Mr and Mrs James MERRITT of 42 Payneham Road, St Peters, SA.  Married with one child and residing at 26 Sussex Street, Lower North Adelaide, Norman was educated at Rose Park and North Adelaide Schools.  He played football and cricket and was keen on boxing.  Norman gained success at this sport.  He was also a good swimmer and took part in many contests reaching the final at the City Baths in 1930.  In civilian life he worked at Holdens and Pengelleys and also travelled about northern South Austraia and was fond of bush life.  He enlisted in June 1940.

His father Private James MERRITT fought with the 32nd Battalion in the Great War and contracted fever in Palestine and was invalided home in 1917.
