William Purcell was a South Australian soldier who served in World War 1. He was born in 1880. He was described to have been 5 foot 8 inches and have brown hair and eyes. He was a Baptist and worked as a blacksmith when he enlisted for the Australian army on the 21st of February 1916.

He served as a private in the 2nd depot battalion from the 21st of February 1916 until the 29th of April 1916 before serving in the 32nd IAF Mitcham from the 1st of May 1916 until the 5th of August 1919. While serving in the 32nd IAF Mitcham he was admitted to the 4th Northern General Hospital for a mild fractured malleolus. On February 10th, 1919 he was promoted to a 2nd corporal and he served in the provost corps from the 6th of August 1917 until he was discharged. He disembarked on the 18th of January 1920 and was officially discharged on March 12th, 1920. After his service he was awarded a British War medal for his service in the Australian Imperial Force.
