Biography

Cpl. Claude Parkes 2/27th AIF of 15 Clifton Street Malvern. Aged 31. Son of Mrs L and the late J Parkes of Quorn. Educated at Moonta and Quorn gaining his QC. Fond of sport and played football for Quorn. Fond of animals and good horseman. Popular and well known throughout the Far North. Contracting, well driving and droving in civil life. Enlisted June 1940 and left Australia for Middle East in October 1940. Took part in Syrian campaign and returned to Australia in March 1942. Sent to New Guinea and was killed in action on December 8th 1942. During this campaign he was with a number of companions lost in the bush and surrounded by Japs for 15 days, living only on natural food found in the bush. 

His brother, Gnr J H  Parkes 12th Div. in the Great War was killed in action 3rd May 1917 no known grave.
