Lawrence Gill was born in Hull, England. He was a cook. He was married to Edith and lived with her in Adelaide, Australia. He states his religion to be Church of England.

Lawrence had light brown hair and blue eyes with a distinctive scar on his chest. He was 5 feet 6 inches tall. On 20th June 1940, at the age of twenty six and a half, Lawrence enlisted with the Australian army in Adelaide.

He reported for duty on 25th June 1940 and following training in Adelaide was embarked on the H.M.T Strathedan arriving in the Middle East on 17th Dec 1941. He undertook an instructors course before rejoining his unit in February 1941. In May 1941 Lawrence suffered a renal stone followed by a series of medical problems, returning to Australia in May 1942.

Lawrence Gill was diagnosed with scoliosis in June 1943 and was discharged from service on 3rd August 1943 due to being medically unfit for service.
