Son of the late Mr and Mrs T J SMITH of Adelaide. Residing at 85 Sussex Street North Adelaide at the time of his enlistment in June 1940, William had been educated at Brompton Public School and was most interested in playing football and played in teams in and around Adelaide until he was transferred to Angaston in 1939 where he continued to play. In civilian life he worked on Far North stations as a boundary rider and then came to Adelaide for two years before he joined the AIF.
