Ronald Herbert Arnold was born to Herbert Herman Arnold and his wife Lillian Elizabeth Dunn in Solomontown, Port Pirie, South Australia on 29 March 1910. He was one of seven children and the second eldest child.
Arnold married Phyllis May Shiers at the residence of his father-in-law William Henry Shiers in Adelaide on 18 April 1931. The couple had two sons and two daughters.
Arnold worked as a motor driver prior to his enlistment and after his discharge he worked as a taxi-driver and lived in Woodville Park, South Australia.
