Son of Richard and Frances Gaffney; husband of Katherine Taylor (nee Ferguson) Gaffney. Richard and Katherine married on 28 April 1934 in Scots Church, Flinders Street, Adelaide, SA.

When Richard enlisted he was living in Knoxville, SA this suburb has been divided into the two suburbs, Glenside and Glenunga.
