Private Medwyn Noel Ward (Service Nos:306196/SX4563) initially served in the Militia with 38th Fortress Coy RAE and 3rd Field Coy from 13 February 1939 to 6 June 1940, enlisting in the AIF the following day. Sapper Ward served with 23 Corps Field Coy, and was attached to HQ Engineers Australia Corps when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for the Middle East on 5 February 1941 - returning to Melbourne with 2/9 Field Coy on 16 April 1942. Private Ward served in New Guines - embarking from Melbourne with 2/9 Field Coy for Port Moresby on 11 July 1943 on board the Duntroon. Private Ward was attached to 2/23 Field Platoon on 10 June 1944 when he embarked from Lae for Townsville on board the Duntroon, and was attached to Australian Army Catering Corps at Discharge on 18 September 1945.
Noel was born in Edithburgh, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia in 1920, eldest of three children of Harry Ward (b1884 in Callington via Strathalbyn, South Australia) and Pearl Minola Pascoe (b1893 at Moonta Mines. South Australia). Harry served in WWI (Private; Service Nos:1598/883) and was a Wharf Labourer in 1919 when he and Pearl married in Edithburgh. Harry and Pearl settled in Edithburgh, where they raised their family and Harry was a Wharf Labourer and Wickerworker.
Noel was a Storeman and Truck Diver (Commercial Motor Vehicles Ltd) in Adelaide when he enlisted in the Army in 1939. In 1944, he was in Sydney NSW when he married Mavis Jean Pilton (b1925 in Adelaide, South Australia) - Mavis was a Comptomotrist in Adelaide. Following his Discharge, Noel and Mavis lived in Adelaide before moving in 1949 to Kerang in Victoria, where Noel worked as a Farm Hand. By 1954 Noel and Mavis had settled at Bulkamaugh via Numurkah in Victoria, where they raised their family and Noel was a Farmer. In the mid 1970s Noel and Mavis moved to Sydney, NSW then back to Victoria by 1980 - Noel worked as a Storeman. In the 1990s Noel and Mavis returned to South Australia, and lived at O'Sullivan Beach in Adelaide (NAA). Noel died in 2001 and Mavis in 2014.
