Son of Rev. Cuthbert Tremaine and Mrs RODDA of The Rectory, Violet Town, Victoria. Educated at Ivanhoe Grammar School, Lloyd took an interest in football and agriculture and in civilian life was a farmer.  He enlisted in March 1940 and went overseas to Syria and Palestine for 18 months and was among those specially commended in his Battalion for consistent devotion to duty and individual gallantry shown during the Syrian Campaign and received his stripe.
