Francis was the second of five children of Reginald Bickford (b1880 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Rosa Florence Cudmore (b1879 at Paringa, South Australia). Reginald - a Chemist and member of the Adelaide AM Bickford and Sons Coy - and Rosa married in 1910 at Glenelg in Adelaide, SA, where they settled and raised their family.

Francis married Adelaide Blades (b1910 in Southwark, SA) in 1939 at St Peter's College Chapel in Adelaide SA. Francis - an Audit Clerk and Master of the Adelaide Hunt Club Hounds - enlisted in the Australian Army in May 1940. He served (Sergeant, Lieutenant; Service No:SX3025) in the Middle East (1940 - 1943), New Guinea (1943 - 1944) and the South West Pacific Area (1945). he was attached to 2/7 Field Regiment when he was Discharged in October 1946. Brother Reginald (Captain, Major: Service Nos:S34264/SX27742) also served in WWII.

Francis died in 1989 and Adelaide in 2008.
