Son of William John and Mabel Gertrude Hardwick of 21 Baliol Street, College Park, SA.
Husband of Doris Minnie Elizabeth Hardwick, of Pooraka, South Australia. Educated at Tailmen Bend and College Park Schools he played football and cricket and in civilian life worked at labouring in and around the Norwood District. He was with John Walton's Confectinery Factory for some time. Enlisting in May 1940, Jack left Australia for the Middle East in November 1940 and fought in desert and Jerabub in the Syrian campaign and spent 5 1/2 months in Tobruk, then transferred to Syria.
