Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Edward Cumming (Service Nos:2590/NX103029) enlisted in the Australian Army on 21 July 1942. In 1957 then Warrant Officer I Cumming of the Royal Corps of Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (AEME)was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.  He served until retirement in the 1970s. Brother Douglas served in the RAAF in WWII (Service No:167915)

Born in 1918 in Largs Bay South Australia, Alexander was the eldest of two children of Alexander (Alec) Cumming (b1890 in Bridgewater, Victoria) and Jessie Ellen Sallaway (b1891 in Cobar, NSW). Alec (a Soldier) and Jessie married in 1917 in Burrowa, NSW and lived in NSW, Victoria and South Australia following Alec's Army postings. Alec enlisted in 1911, serving with Royal Australian Garrison Artillery. 

Alexander followed in his father's footsteps and served in the Australian Army through WWII and in peace time. In 1941 in Sydney NSW he married Hilda (Pinkie) Emma Dodd (b1913 in Sydney, NSW). Alexander and Pinkie retired to Woy Woy NSW in the mid 1970s. Alexander died in February 1984 and Pinkie in September that year
