Private Charles Peter Hocking (Service No:SX2767) enlisted in the Army on 14 May 1940 and was attached to 2/9 Infantry Battalion on 5 November 1940 when he embarked for the Middle East on board HMT Strathellen. Private Hocking served in Palestine and Egypt and was WiA (shrapnel wounds) on 29 March 1941. He embarked from the Middle East for Adelaide via Bombay on 12 March 1942 on board the Nieu Amsterdam. Private Hocking served in New Guinea with HQ 18 Brigade (12 August 1942 - 7 March 1944) and was attached to HQ 9 Division at Discharge on 28 August 1945.

Charles was born at Port Adelaide, South Australia in 1904, eldest of five children of Hannibal Hocking (b1880 at Port Adelaide, South Australia) and Mary Ann Jamieson (b1883 at Glanville,  South Australia). Hannibal and Mary married in Semaphore in 1903 and settled at Port Adelaide where they raised their family and Hannibal was an Engine Driver and Mary and Grocer.

Charles worked as a Taxi Driver and in 1928 married Beryl Stella Pomeroy (b1907 in Adelaide, South Australia). Charles and Beryl settled in Alberton, Port Adelaide where Charles was a Taxi Driver until his enlistment in 1940. Charles and beryl were divorced in 1945. Charles died in 1966.
