Corporal Whitfield Seth Parnell was born in a small South Australian town, Orroroo on the 5th of October 1919. After school he worked for a transport company that transported goods across outback. Whitfield enlisted in Adelaide, South Australia, on the 11th of March 1940.

Whitfield embarked from Port Adelaide and set sail on the Strathmore for the Middle East, on the 24th of June 1940. Whitfield served with the 2/10th Battalion in the Middle East from 24 June 1940 - 27 February 1943. He returned to Australia and was transferred to the 2/156 Transport Company and was then deployed to New Guinea from 28/ July 1943 - 7 March 1944. He served in Netherland East Indies from 23 April 1945 - 16 October 1945.

Whitfield was discharged 5 November 1945. After the war Whitfield returned to his hometown of Orroroo and died in 1975 aged 58. He is buried at Orroroo Cemetery.
