Biography contributed by John Oakes
Thomas MATHERS (Service Number 3502) was 26-years-old when he enlisted in September 1916. He had been born in Millers Point in the heart of Sydney. He gave his occupation sometimes as labourer but had been employed for some months in 1913-14 and again since March 1915 as a casual tram conductor in Sydney. He was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces in September 1916.
He embarked for overseas service in January 1917. He was promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant in 1917 before proceeding to France. Although he was clearly out of the country during the great strike of November 1917, his record card was marked, in red ink, that he had been ‘Loyal during strike 1917’.
He was disabled in a gas attack in April 1918 but was able to re-join his unit two months later. He was killed in action on 1st September 1918. A memorial cross was erected for him in Péronne Communal Cemetery Extension, reading ‘Believed to be buried in this Cemetery, actual grave unknown’.
