Known as a tall and attractive women Mary Kennedy was a School Teacher by profession and taught at a number of schools in the Southeast including Tantanoola and Muddy Flats.
Mary Kennedy moved to Melbourne in May of 1942 and joined the Australian Women’s Army Services and worked at 339 Swanston Street for some time (in the same building as her brother Michael).
Sergeant Mary Kennedy was discharged from the Australian Infantry Forces (A.I.F.) on the 22nd of October 1945 due to ill health after completing 1125 days service.
Sergeant Mary Kennedy lived with her mother and sister Ellen in Melbourne until her mother passed away in 1959.
When Sergeant Mary Kennedy left Melbourne, she was housekeeper to Father Gleeson, the Penola Parish Priest later moving to Mount Gambier and again lived with her sister Ellen until she died suddenly in 1967.
Sergeant Mary Kennedy lies at rest in the Mount Gambier Lawn Cemetery.
Mary is remembered as a lovely, graceful lady.
