OFF TO WAR
On 3 September 1939, the world faced a second major conflict with the declaration of war by Great Britain on Germany. Australia immediately followed and in January 1940 the first contingent of the A.I.F (6th Division) sailed for the Middle East.
Both the Cluney brothers would join the call for arms.
Alan enlisted with the Army on 10 April 1940 at Caulfield while his younger brother Bruce joined the Air Force on 18 June 1942 while residing in Sydney. Alan may have understated his age by four years in order to meet the recruiting age. Both brothers were discharged in November 1945 after the end of hostilities.
