WILLIAM MAXWELL MIDDLETON was born at Goodwood, near Adelaide, South Australia, on 30th July, 1888, the son of Mr. William Lindsay Middleton and Mrs. Mary Ann Rebecca Middleton. He was educated at the Fort Street Public School, Sydney, and entered the service of the Bank at the Head Office on 17th April, 1905. He was transferred to Bathurst Street, Sydney, in August, and to Rozelle in November, 1905; thence to Wagga Wagga in February, 1907, and while there was appointed ledger-keeper. He was sent to Samarai, Papua, in November, 1910, as assistant; and in January, 1914, returned to the Head Office.

William Middleton enlisted in the A.I.F. on 11th September, 1914, and left Australia in the following November as a member of the Army Medical Corps (No. 2 A .G .H .). In May, 1915, he obtained a transfer to the Infantry, and saw service in Egypt, Gallipoli and France as a member of the Lewis Gun Section of the 15th Battalion. He won promotion to sergeant in November, 1916, and returned to Australia in October, 1917.
