Joseph Leonard Holland
Uncle Jos was my great-uncle. He lived in West Hindmarsh. I remember him as a very tall, upright gentleman. I was in awe of him, he was a Warder at the Adelaide and Yatala Gaols (for which he later was awarded the BEM for service to the SA Prisons Department)
Joseph embarked in 1915, along with his older brother Albert, for Gallipoli, then eventually on to France. His older brother Thomas was already on active service.
On one occasion, all three brothers met up in the trenches. I have a photo copy.
Joseph was also a prolific letter writer and I have one sent to his sister Ellen, my grandmother.
Joseph died in 1963 aged 66 years.
