Plane was Liberator VFL 990 of 59 Squadron lost Inishowen,Ireland
Rank - Flight Sergeant
Took off from Ballykelly, Ireland at about 1.55pm for an operational sortie, Anti U-Boat patrol, and soon after crashed into high ground, burst into flames and burnt out. All crew were killed. The ground where the plane crashed was covered in cloud at 900 feet.
The cause of the crash is unknown as there was a lack of evidence from eye witnesses and the lack of technical evidence due to the damage to the plane. Enquiries were greatly hampered by the fact that the crash occured in neutral territory and that is was a waste of time to guess without evidence of proof
Foster-son of Anders Nielsen and Evelyn Ruth Apitz, of Hamilton, New South Wales, Australia.
