Corporal Avard was 22. His brother Private Philip Charles Avard, Service Number 3224, fell, aged 18 in France in the Great War. They were sons of of Charles William and Sarah Avard, of Canterbury, New South Wales, Australia, formerly of Hope St., Warialda, New South Wales.
