Wirraway aircraft A20-131 and A20-440 from Number 5 Service Flying Training School collided in mid-air approximately 10 miles north-west of Wagga

A20-440 was landed by the student pilot - LAC Utting 426785 (discharged from the RAAF as a Flying Officer in November 1945); the instructing pilot was Warrant Officer Kenneth Averill 406429 who was discovered with fatal head injuries after the landing

The crew of A20-131 baled out but the parachute of LAC Rayner 426913 did not deploy correctly and he was killed; the pilot - Flying Officer Oberg 411369 - survived and he was discharged from the RAAF in November 1945 as a Flight Lieutenant -
